The Multi-State Working Group on Environmental Management Systems, or MSWG, is a consortium of federal and state agencies, non-governmental organizations, industry representatives and academia that is examining the public policy implications of environmental management systems, particularly ISO 14001.
Members meet quarterly to discuss issues related to environmental management systems and ISO 14001 as well as the use of EMSs in innovative regulatory programs. The MSWG has also held national workshops on the topic and sponsored a research summit on EMS issues.
Fifteen state members along with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency have partnered with companies and organizations within their jurisdiction that are implementing EMSs. These companies are providing environmental and other data to a national database that will be used to study how EMSs affect environmental performance.
The Multi-State Working Group is administered through the Council of State Governments.
